Was für ein Team hätte es noch eine Dekade lang sein können. Sammer, Effenberg, Doll, Kirsten, Basler kamen noch hinzu. Der Kern des 90er Teams blieb noch knappe 5 Jahre, Häßler und Möller zB blüten erst nach der WM auf … aber bis auf Sammer konnte/wollte sich kein dieser Spieler großartig hervortun.

Theoretisch war das 92er Team nochmals stärker als das 90er. Vielleicht der ein oder andere schon über seinem Peak hinaus. Aber im wesentlichen ist die Hauptmannschaft zusammengeblieben und es sind noch Topleute wie Sammer, Doll und Effenberg dazugekommen.Leider Matthäus verletzt nicht bei der EM. Für mich damals ein mittleres Drama.

Germany was top over all from 80 toll 96 starting and ending with the EM title. Then going down from the WM 98, till 2006 with the „Summer Miracle“ a long way to the WM Title 2014 starts. I was at the stadium that night. Totally full stadium with more than 21.000 spectators in Aarhus. The game was very tight and unfortunately for Danmark, West Germany won 1-0 and qualified for the Olympics where they eventually won the Bronze, as far as I remember. But it is interesting that in the Danish Starting Eleven, there were SIX players who would eventually also be in Denmark´s Starting Eleven in the European Championship Final in 1992 where they took the revenge and won 2-0 against West Germany....(The six players were: Schmeichel, Lars Olsen, Kent Nielsen, John Jensen, Kim Vilfort and Flemming Povlsen). Besides that Brian Laudrup was on the bench and came in during the second half. As we all know West Germany won the World Cup in 1990 and a couple of the players from the 1987 Olympic Qualifier were in the team, so those two Olympic Teams from 1987-88 were both very strong. As we can see, Jürgen Klinsmann was in Germany´s Starting Eleven that night in Aarhus against Denmark. He would eventually become a huge star in Inter in Italy. Their goalkeeper, Andreas Köpke, would later win the European Championship with Germany in 1996. Also Thomas Hässler appeared in the last few minutes of this game in Aarhus in 1987. He would win the World Cup three years later..... So this Olympic Qualifier from 1987 was actually a pretty interesting game, especially when you look back at the game today in 2023 and see all the big names that were on the pitch. Especially Schmeichel, Laudrup, Hässler and Klinsmann....
